Teen DPS Test: Required Documents Checklist
Taking
your DPS road test is a big step toward driving independence. But if
you show up without the right documents, your test could be delayed—or
worse, canceled. To avoid last-minute stress, here’s a no-fluff
checklist of what teen drivers need to bring for a smooth testing
experience.
✅ 1. Texas Learner’s Permit (Instruction Permit)
You
must have your valid and unexpired learner’s permit. This proves you've
been legally practicing under supervision. If it's damaged or lost, get
a replacement before your test.
✅ 2. DE-964 Certificate (Driver Education Certificate)
Provided by your driving school after completing both the 32 hours of classroom instruction and required behind-the-wheel training. No certificate = no test.
✅ 3. Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) Certificate
This
is a two-hour online course required by DPS. You must complete it
within 90 days before your road test. Bring a printed certificate
showing your completion.
✅ 4. VOE (Verification of Enrollment) Form or Diploma
Teens under 18 must prove school enrollment. The VOE form is available from your school and valid for 30 days. During summer, bring a form dated before school ended or show your high school diploma/GED.
✅ 5. Parent or Guardian
A parent or legal guardian must be present to sign required paperwork. If they can't attend, bring a notarized form authorizing someone else.
✅ 6. Road-Ready Vehicle
Your test car must be:
In good working condition (lights, horn, brakes, etc.)
Currently registered and inspected
Covered by active insurance
Bring your insurance card as proof.
✅ 7. Photo ID or School ID (Optional)
Not always required, but helpful for verifying your identity and making the check-in process smoother.
